Welcome to Durham Cathedral

a virtual tour courtesy of Minecraft.

What is Minecraft?

a very successful computer "game" in which players can construct entire worlds by placing or removing blocks very quickly with a mouse click.

Why Durham Cathedral?

I visited the cathedral many times when I lived in the North East of England. I wanted to try and recreate the experience of moving through the space of that ancient building.

Why use Minecraft?

I have a Raspberry Pi computer which comes with a version of the Minecraft software. I wanted to try and "sculpt" the Cathedral in a virtual world.

The result?

I had to work within the limitations of the nature of the program (more about this on the Construction page ) I think that I came up with creative solutions to certain problems which also means the end result was not what was anticipated.

Observations?

To really appreciate the structure one needs to be able to navigate through it and outside it. Until I can find a way to enable that I do not feel that the visitor to this website will be able to have the true experience.
